What is disktective?

Disktective is a convenient freeware disk-reporting tool that enables you to find out the real size of your directories and distribution of used disk space.

Each directory on your harddisk may contain hundreds of subdirectories each of which can contain many files. To find the distribution of used space inside all of these directories, you need Disktective!

Simply run Disktective and let the program create a complete report displaying the real sizes of all directories and their containing subdirectories.

Installing Disktective.

Simply copy the four files into a directory of your choice on your hard-disk. Then start the program by double clicking on it. You can also run it directly from a USB stick, DVD, external drive, etc.

Optional installation instructions.
(adding an icon to a program-group)

Click the start-button on your screen with your right mouse-button and select 'open'. Then double-click the 'programs' group.
After that, double click the program group you want to install Disktective into. In that program group, RIGHT click an empty space inside the group with your mouse and select 'new' - 'shortcut'. Click the 'browse' button in 'Create Shortcut'. Browse to the directory where disktective resides on your disk. Then press the 'open' button and finish the process.

Notes for Linux

We tested Disktective successfully using Wine 1.2.1. To start Disktective on Linux/Wine you might first need to update the file permissions of the executable so that it is allowed to be executed.
Then right-click on the executable and select a menu item similar to 'Open with Wine'.
If this option is not available on your Linux distribution, (1) open a terminal window, (2) then goto the Disktective program directory (3) and type 'wine disktective.exe'.

Some older versions of Wine do not run Disktective properly. This is due to a bug in the implementation of the gdiplus API in these Wine versions. To find out your Wine version, just type 'wine --version' in a terminal window.

Notes for Windows 98

Some earlier versions of Windows 98 miss the gdiplus.dll file.
See http://www.freebyte.com/drivers/#finddlls on where to get this file.
Just copy the gdiplus.dll file into the Disktective program directory (or the Windows directory), then start Disktective.
